London's Carnaby Street was a pretty crazy place when we opened the doors of our first restaurant back in 1961. Whilst we might not have been rewriting the political rulebooks, we were rewriting the cookery books with our philosophy of Nature Knows Best.

Today you'll find us in the comparatively calmer surroundings of The Cider Press Centre, near Totnes in Devon, but our commitment to producing fresh, tasty, wholesome food hasn't changed a jot. That's what Proper Food is all about.

Run by Jo Dovell, who also plays a large part in cooking and hosting, the restaurant has been attracting customers looking for something out of the ordinary from all over the UK for the past 30 years. Obviously people who live in Scotland won't nip there for a spot of lunch, but they might visit on holiday.

Every meal in this self-service restaurant is cooked from scratch every day in our on-site kitchen. It's the only way we can guarantee everything is as fresh as we want it to be. And this small but mind-bogglingly efficient team help create a warm, homely atmosphere too. We're not a massive chain, with swanky fittings and frosted glass plates, but what we may lack in unnecessary extravagance, we more than make up for in sublime food.

All the bread is baked locally with Organic flour, all the food is sourced locally (by locally we don't mean France or anything, we mean in Devon) and if you don't fancy having your lunch in the tranquil surroundings of our gardens, you can always ask for it to take away to enjoy in the comfort of your own home.
